Mindfulness is the most powerful to centre yourself. Specially during this Covid time, it is really really important that we go on a journey INSIDE. So, what is Mindfulness? We are hearing about Mindfulness around us!! Let us understand Mindfulness through a wonderful story
Untying the Knots: A Story from Buddha’s Teachings
Once when Gautama the Buddha came to teach his disciples, he was carrying a beautiful silk handkerchief in his hands. Thousands of disciples were waiting and as they saw him walking towards them, they were surprised to see such an article in the Buddha’s hand as it was most unusual.
When the Buddha addressed the gathering, he asked “what do you see?” and they said, a beautiful silken handkerchief. Then slowly the Buddha started to put knots on the handkerchief, one after another, until he put 5 knots. Then he asked whether it was the same handkerchief. His disciples answered that it was the same handkerchief, yet different, as it was in knots now.
The Buddha said that is what I want you to understand. You are all Buddha but you cannot see the silken fine fabric because you are in knots.
I am like the same handkerchief but without knots.
Then he went on to pull the handkerchief from both sides and asked whether the knots would open this way.
They spoke in unison saying that this way the knots will in fact tighten and become more difficult to open.
Then the Buddha asked, why do you then try to open your knots by pulling? He continued to say that while your intention in doing so is good, your very doing is its undoing. It is trying too hard, taking too much trouble. You are making it more complicated.
He then further asked that if he needed to open these knots, what was needed to be done?
A monk answered that he would come close, observe and try to understand how the knots were formed. And if one saw how they were formed, one would be able to undo them.
Then Buddha said that is right and ended the sermon saying this is all he wanted to teach them. He ended by saying they needed to meditate upon their own knots.
What does these knots represent in our life?? It will be different for different people for some it will be knots in relationships, for some knots in their profession or business, for few knots will be coping up with stress or work load, for many knots will be self-worth but unless we don’t untie these knots out, we will not be able to see the precious gifts that we have received so far in our life and these gifts are our talent, our self-worth, our people around us, the blessings we have in our life and many more more and more
Mindfulness is a beautiful practice that helps in untying these knots by connecting and being rooted in life as it flows by. It encompasses getting our minds back to the present and paying attention to the life that is unfolding right now within us and around us. “Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and being non-judgmental.” It has to be a daily routine for us to focus on the present moment.
Easy to say but how to do it practically. A very simple but the most powerful way to practice is to Meditate. Meditation is not a rocket science; many people tell me that they are not be to Meditate. Follow these simple steps and slowly and gradually you will be able to sit for Meditation
Step 1 : Sit comfortably straight in a quiet place
Step 2 : Close your eyes
Step 3 : Just focus on your breathe, IN & OUT
Step 4 : continue as long as you can (minimum 5 minutes in a day, maximum is your choice)
Isn’t it very simple and practical? Now, question arises “I get to many thoughts during this process” And I would say its normal, let thoughts come but don’t focus on it, SWIPE them away, next again SWIPE them away; Slowly and gradually either in few days or few weeks or few months your thoughts will reduce. Till then just keep patience and believe in the process.
In addition to above meditation, you can also cultivate mindfulness informally by focusing your attention on your moment-to-moment sensations during everyday activities. This is done by single-tasking—doing one thing at a time and giving it your full attention. As you brush your teeth, get dressed up , or eat your meal, slow down the process and be fully present as it unfolds and involves all of your senses. That means, feel the texture, taste, smell, the sensation in the body part involved. Be aware in the moment, this is also a great tool to Centre yourself.
For me a combination of Mindfulness and Gratitude has worked wonders since last few years. In my entire day, I take pauses and, in my heart, say Thank You for everything in my life. The food I eat, the water I get, my family, my house, name it I give Gratitude to every single living and non-living thing in my life. And this has given me wonderful results and a great peace of mind.
Any activity that is related to habit change takes it own space and time, so believe and wait for the ultimate satisfying result.
